Dr Akbar Ashrafi is an internationally recognised, Australian-trained and United States fellowship-trained urological surgeon treating general adult urological conditions. He has sub-specialised training in minimally invasive robotic surgery and offers the latest minimally invasive treatments for BPH, kidney cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer and other conditions.
Qualifications and Training
Dr Akbar Ashrafi graduated from Auckland Medical School with the Senior Scholar Award. He was awarded the Worshipful Company of Barber Surgeons Scholarship to attend Oxford Medical School in his final year of medical school. Dr Ashrafi completed his Internship and Basic Surgical Training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he was nominated for Victorian Junior Doctor of the Year and became a national finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford. He then completed six years of Advanced Surgical Training in Urological Surgery and graduated as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS).
Dr Ashrafi's commitment to delivering world-class, cutting-edge care led him to pursue further fellowship training and sub-specialty expertise. He completed a 12-month Australian Fellowship at St George Hospital in Sydney. He then passed four exams for the United States Medical Licensing Exams and gained ECFMG certification, enabling him to practice as a Urologist in the United States.
Dr Ashrafi is one of the few urologists in Adelaide with a fully dedicated overseas Robotic Surgery Uro-Oncology Fellowship. Dr Ashrafi completed the prestigious Advanced Robotic Surgery and Urologic Oncology Fellowship at the world-famous University of Southern California (USC) Institute of Urology in Los Angeles. At USC, Dr Ashrafi completed three additional years of subspecialty training, during which time he worked alongside and was mentored by world-renowned leaders in robotic surgery and urologic oncology, including the distinguished innovator and pioneer, Dr Inderbir Gill. Dr Ashrafi served as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Urology at the USC Institute of Urology. Dr Ashrafi was awarded the Australasian Urological Foundation Scholarship and a RACS travel grant to attend his Fellowship. Dr Ashrafi is the only United States and USC fellowship trained robotic surgeon in South Australia.
Specialist Services
Dr Ashrafi manages a wide range of adult urological conditions including elevated PSA, benign prostate enlargement, kidney stones, haematuria (blood in the urine), and kidney lesions.
Dr Ashrafi has a sub-specialty clinical interest in the management of prostate, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancers.
Dr Ashrafi’s subspecialty training in minimally invasive robotic surgery allows him to perform complex operations through small incisions with the use of a sophisticated robotic-assisted system, resulting in less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, and earlier return to daily activities.
Education and Research
Education and research are key components of Dr Ashrafi's practice. Dr Ashrafi has over 50 peer-reviewed journal publications and over 150 conference presentations and abstract publications. His research has been presented at international conferences around the world, including the North American Robotic Urology Symposium (NARUS), Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO), American Urological Association (AUA), European Association of Urology (EAU), World Congress of Endourology (WCE), and Société Internationale d'Urologie (SIU) meetings. He has contributed to book chapters on the latest robotic surgery and urologic cancer management techniques. He serves as a reviewer for several journals and holds the honorary academic title of Clinical Senior Lecturer with the School of Medicine at The University of Adelaide and Flinders University. He is the supervisor of Intern, RMO and registrar surgical training at the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network Urology Unit. Dr Ashrafi has been awarded numerous research grants, scholarships and awards for his dedication to teaching and academia.
