Rezum™ Water Vapor Therapy
Key Points
Rezum™ Water Vapor Therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for men with urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate
Minimally Invasive: Uses natural steam to shrink excess prostate tissue and improve urine flow—no cutting or burning involved.
Quick Recovery: Performed as a day procedure, with a temporary catheter for a few days afterward.
Low Risk of Side Effects: Sexual function is usually preserved; issues like erectile dysfunction or dry ejaculation are rare.
Long-Term Relief: Most men experience lasting improvement, though a small number may need further treatment later on.
What does this procedure involve?
The Rezum™ procedure is a gentle, minimally invasive treatment for an enlarged prostate, which can block the flow of urine.
Steam Therapy: A small telescope is passed through the urethra (urine tube), and short bursts of steam are injected directly into the enlarged prostate tissue. The steam safely shrinks the tissue over 3–6 months, relieving pressure on the bladder.
Targeted Treatment: The number of steam injections depends on the size and shape of your prostate. Steam is directed to both the sides of the prostate and any tissue pushing into the bladder.
Quick Recovery: The procedure is usually done as a day-case. A temporary catheter is placed to help you pass urine in the first few days after surgery.
Fewer Side Effects: Compared to traditional surgery, Rezum™ has a lower risk of sexual side effects like erectile dysfunction or dry ejaculation, and most men can return to normal activities sooner.
What are the alternatives?
There are several alternatives to the Rezum™ procedure for treating BPH.
Medications: Prescription medications such as alpha-blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors can help relieve BPH symptoms by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and reducing its size.
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP): TURP is a surgical procedure that involves removing a portion of the prostate gland through the urethra. This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia, is more invasive and may require a longer hospital stay.
Urolift procedure
Laser therapy: Laser therapy uses a high-energy laser to remove or vaporise prostate tissue.
The choice of treatment will depend on several factors such as the severity of symptoms, the size of the prostate gland, and your overall health and preferences. It's important to discuss all the available options with Dr. Ashrafi to determine the best treatment plan.
What are the risks of the procedure?
Urinary tract infection (7-10%)
Urinary retention (<5%)
Bleeding: The risk of significant bleeding during or after the procedure is less than 1%.
Retrograde ejaculation (5-10%): semen flows back into the bladder instead of out through the penis. This usually does not cause any long-term health problems.
Need for further intervention at 4 years (4%)
Are there any after-effects?
Temporary burning & stinging when you pass urine (33%, may last for 5-14 days)
Blood in the urine: Temporary bleeding during or after the procedure (25%). This is usually mild and resolves on its own within a few days.
Temporary pain or discomfort in your pelvic area (20%)
Most patients are able to resume their normal activities within 1-2 weeks after the Rezum™ procedure.
