Postoperative Instructions

Cystoscopy and Bladder Biopsy

Diet

After anaesthesia, begin with clear liquids. Depending on how you feel, you may resume your normal diet. Drink plenty of water. The more blood you see in the urine, the more water you should drink to flush the system and keep clots from forming.

Bladder symptoms

  • It is normal to see blood, debris and small blood clots in the urine for 1-4 weeks after surgery.

  • You may feel burning and stinging with urination for the first several weeks after surgery.

  • It is also common to have more frequent urination and a greater sense of the urge to urinate.

  • You may have a catheter in place for a few days to allow the bladder time to heal. It is important to keep the catheter well secured to the leg and avoid any tugging on the catheter.

Activity

Avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting until the blood in the urine has cleared for several days. Then slowly resume your normal activity. You may shower as you normally do.

Medications

  • Take the medications prescribed at the time of your discharge from the hospital.

  • If you are taking any medications regularly prior to your admission to the hospital, you should continue to take those as well.

  • For any aches or pains, you may use paracetamol (500mg x 2 tablets every 4-6 hours, maximum 8 tablets). You can take anti-inflammatories if needed.

  • Take plenty of fibre, water and over-the-counter stool softeners to avoid straining for bowel movements or constipation.

Postoperative appointment

You will need an appointment a few weeks after your discharge. You can call the office on 08 8119 0961 to make a follow-up appointment if you do not already have one. You may drive to this visit.

Call the office or present to the Emergency Department if:

  • You develop a fever or chills

  • The catheter stops draining, or you are unable to urinate

  • You have uncontrolled pain

  • You are passing large clots bigger than a 50-cent coin
