Postoperative Instructions
Rezum™ Water Vapor Therapy
Diet
After your procedure, start with clear fluids and progress to your normal diet as tolerated. Drink plenty of water (2–3 litres per day) unless otherwise advised. This helps flush the bladder and reduces irritation, debris, and clot formation.
Urinary / Bladder Symptoms
It is expected to experience the following after Rezūm:
Burning or stinging with urination for 1–3 weeks
Increased urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia (often temporarily worse before improving)
Blood in the urine (light bleeding, debris or small clots) for up to 2–4 weeks
Weak urinary stream initially, with gradual improvement over several weeks
Important:
Symptoms often peak at 1–2 weeks due to prostate swelling before improvement begins. Full benefit may take 6–12 weeks.
Catheter Care
Most patients will go home with a urinary catheter for 5–7 days
Ensure the catheter is securely taped to the leg and avoid pulling or kinking
Keep the drainage bag below bladder level at all times
Some leakage around the catheter is normal
You will be advised regarding the timing of catheter removal.
Activity
Avoid heavy lifting, straining, or vigorous exercise for 1–2 weeks
Gentle walking is encouraged
Avoid cycling or activities that put pressure on the perineum
You may shower as normal
Resume normal activity gradually once symptoms improve
Sexual Activity
Avoid ejaculation for at least 2 weeks
It is common to notice reduced or absent ejaculate (retrograde ejaculation) or discomfort initially
Erectile function is typically preserved
